1969 marked Duke Ellington's 70th year, and in honor of the occasion, Jazz Impresario George Wein sent Ellington and his band out on a European tour, a 70th birthday tour, so to speak. In a brief concert series entitled "Newport to Paris", for the first time on record we have the chance to hear Duke and the band performing live in Paris, and the Salle Pleyel in November, 1969. On this night we hear Duke and his orchestra in rare form, presenting a few of such newly written compositions, featuring luminaries like Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown, Russell Procope, Paul Gonsalves, Cat Anderson and more.
This is Ellington live in Paris in '69. An Ellington fan will know that this means an excellent show with a mix of old chestnuts and some newer pieces played energetically by a band that was playing as if it were fighting for its life. No faulting the music here; there's energy and joy in these performances. The sound is neither great nor bad, just so so, mono. And my copy is a cdr. This doesn't bother me much, but if it bothers you, chances are you'll receive one too.If you're an Ellington completist as I am becoming, you'll want this. If you are new to Ellington there are many better sounding and properly pressed discs out there, and I'd recommend the contemporaneous "70th Birthday Concert" as a good release to hear late '69 Ellington.
